Mr T - £100
- Firm But Fair -
Mr. T (born Laurence Tureaud) was a classic icon of the 1980s, entertaining people of all ages as well as teaching some compelling lessons. He is well-known for his acting roles, in particular Sergeant "B. A." (Bad Attitude) Baracus in 'The A-Team' and boxer James "Clubber" Lang in 'Rocky III'. Alongside his acting career, Mr. T has built himself a reputation for his eccentric Mohawk hairstyle which he first saw in a copy of National Geographic on an African Mandinka warrior. It has been said that he chose this style to make a powerful statement about his African origins. He is also renowned for wearing numerous gold chains, rings and bracelets which he felt represented the chains that African slaves wore.
The catchphrase "I pity the fool!" came from Mr. T's role in Rocky III, in which he played a boxer facing Rocky Balboa. It stuck! This painting is a recognized piece of advertising that Mr. T did for high security locks. My inspiration for painting Mr. T was the supremacy of this picture. It makes a statement, one which many people recognise. Mr. T took on his name as the 'Mr' gives him the respect that his father and older brother never had throughout their lives, enduring constant racism and poor treatment. Everything about Mr. T wants you to remember his origins and by painting him, I feel like I'm passing on his message.
