Metallica - £75
- Leading the Stage -
If you are unfamiliar with the music of the rock band Metallica then at first glance this picture will only reveal to you that this person is a musician. He is, in fact, James Hetfield, the lead man for one of the most popular recording rock bands in the last twenty years.
The band Metallica has its roots in the hard rock scenes of New York and Los Angeles. The four member band fed itself with bologna and bread while churning out what can only be described as ground breaking heavy metal. Their mantra was speed, speed and more speed. They were an underground favourite who cared little for the fame and fortune that most others bands strive for. They wanted to play loud, aggressive rock music and they wanted their fans to have one hell of a time listening to it.
There are literally hundreds of rock stars that I could have chosen to paint. But very few of them still have the dirt under their nails from the work they did to get where they are now. James Hetfield is one of them. I am inspired by his passion to perform because that is what he loves and what he was made to do. He is dedicated to his fans and he has often stated that he is just a lucky fan from the third row who got on stage. He knows where he came from and he gives 110% to stay where he is now.
The work is about the energy one person gathers before unleashing it back towards a waiting audience. Here you can see James bent backwards, like a catapault, holding the fury of his drive until he launches it back towards the crowd.
I am hoping people will feel the energy of the man in the artwork. That people will feel that at any moment the hush of the concert will be replaced by a raw, focused energy and they will be swept away on that ride. I want the audience to feel the energy of the concert and sense the manic surge of the moment every time they look at the picture.
