Lion - £105
- Looking through a Lions Eyes -
The Lion has been an icon for humanity for thousands of years, appearing in cultures across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Despite various incidents of attacks on humans, lions have held onto a positive depiction in culture as strong and noble. By being represented commonly as "the king of the jungle", the lion has been a popular symbol of royalty and stateliness, as well as a symbol of bravery.
The head of a male lion is one of the most highly acknowledged animal symbols in human culture. It is distinctive and is easily recognised by its mane. The mane makes the lion appear larger, providing an excellent intimidation display. Add this to their powerful legs, strong jaw and their three inch canine teeth and it creates a strong and dominant feline who can bring down and kill large prey within seconds.
Lions are predatory carnivores that manifest in two types of social organisation. Some become residents of a pride and some, labelled nomads, roam freely and sporadically, either singularly or in pairs. Those lions associated with a pride tend to stay on the outer edge, patrolling their territory and defending it against intruders. This was the start of my inspiration for 'Looking through a Lions Eyes'.
I wanted to create a painting of power. Such a majestic creature as a lion was surely the subject of such a piece of art and by combining the strength and dominance of the animal with the protection it gives to it's pride, I wanted to build a sense of equilibrium. This lion is in control. I specifically painted from a side-on view as I am not trying to intimidate my audience, rather show them the beauty of this great predator. By facing sideways, seemingly gazing out into the distance, it gives a sense that he is watching out for his pride, shielding them from harm.
