Johnny Cash - £95
- F The System -
"Hello, I?m Johnny Cash!" was the traditional start to this Grammy Award-winning American country singer-songwriter's concerts. Renowned for his deep, distinctive voice and his dark clothing which earned him the nickname 'The Man in Black', Cash sold over 90 million albums during his nearly fifty-year career and came to occupy a unassailable position in music history.
Driven by the influences of country and gospel music, Cash began playing the guitar at the age of 12. Throughout his life he has recorded over 1,500 songs, appeared in numerous dramatic roles in movies and on television, and has released various autobiographical best sellers. Cash is a fervent supporter of prisoner's rights (among other things) and in the late 1950s he began to perform concerts at various prisons. The songs which he performed were all about prison, crime, murder, regret, and loss, Cash stimulates the audience's emotions, which in turn stimulates his performance, especially since he delivers the songs with the conviction of someone who has lived through it.
This painting is a reproduction of a well-known photo of Johnny Cash with his middle finger sticking straight up at the viewer, taken in 1970 at San Quentin Prison, Calif. The photographer allegedly asked Cash to send a message to the prison?s warden. The same photo resurfaced in 1998 in an advert that read "American Recordings and Johnny Cash would like to acknowledge the Nashville music establishment and country radio for your support." The ad was reportedly placed by Cash's producer, Rick Rubin, as a protest against the mistreatment of music veterans by the country music industry.
This image creates a powerful painting with a powerful statement. Johnny Cash was a musical sensation who wanted to do things his own way, thus, creating my inspiration.
