Ray Charles - £75
- Happiness -
Referred to as "The only true genius in the business" by Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, an American pianist and musician, shaped the sound of rhythm and blues. By the age of seven, Charles was blind but this never stopped him from learning how to write music and play various instruments including the piano, organ, clarinet, sax and trumpet. He lived a full life, leaving behind him, after his death on June the 10th, 2004, an extensive list of hits and Grammy awards, along with the influence he had on many other musicians.
Ray Charles was an explorer. He would venture out into the world, to then return with melodious stories of his adventures. Throughout his life, Charles artistically gathered and combined all types of genre including blues, country, gospel, jazz and big band music and after adding his own unique personality and styling, released the end result for the world to hear.
Ray Charles himself is inspiration enough to paint such an idolised figure. The inner, emotional intensity of his music and his genuinely enthusiastic vocals are known by all, therefore it was the desire to combine all of his talents and sum them up in his irrefutable smile that made me pick up my brush. Ray Charles was just 'himself', humorous and carefree. In response to being convicted and given a five year suspended sentence for his drug bust in 1966, Charles released both I Don't Need No Doctor and Lets Go Get Stoned. He filled his songs with energy and soul (even the Country and Western covers). My inspiration is that of a 'Genius'.
