Kurt Cobain - £70
- Rags and Riches -
On the 20th of February, 1967, a legendary American musician was born by the name of Kurt Donald Cobain. Twenty-seven years later, on the 5th of April, 1994, Cobain took his own life but wasn't easily forgotten. Cobain formed the Seattle-based rock band, Nirvana, in 1987, and by 1991 their influence was causing the music industry to dramatically shift away from the popular genres of the time (glam metal, arena rock and dance-pop) and move more towards grunge and alternative rock.
It would seem that through a series of unfortunate events, Cobain struggled with living a normal life. Many of the songs that he wrote for the band depicted frustration, anger, pain and fear. He is considered a hero by many and even today, fourteen years after his death, he is worshipped as a legend.
It was the tragedy of Cobain's life that inspired me to paint his portrait. I wanted to encapsulate an iconic individual who was an inspiration to so many people, conveying both the power of his life, but also remembering his vulnerability and the depth of his soul. Although Cobain had a rocky, unsettled life, there is a sense of innocence that comes across in his songs and it was this innocence that I focused on, creating an intimate moment in time, his eyes penetrating the audience with such purpose.
