Jimi Hendrix - £80
- Music is My Religion -
Recognised as one of the most influential and creative musicians of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix opened up the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar. Hendrix created a new and innovative style of music, incorporating fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion into his songs. His acrobatic stage moves, including playing with his teeth, behind his back and left-handed playing of a right-handed guitar made him stand out.
Hendrix grew up a shy and sensitive boy, deeply affected by his upbringing in conditions of poverty, neglect and with a troubled family. At age 15, he replaced the broomstick which he would strum in imitation and the one-stringed ukulele that his father found for him, with a $5 acoustic guitar that he bought from a family friend. Hendrix synthesized many styles in creating his musical voice and his guitar style was unique.
The inspiration for this painting was Hendrix's music itself. By just sitting back and listening to his powerful songs, in particular The Star Spangled Banner, he incorporates more than just words into it; he lives the moment. His ability to express emotion and to understand those emotions within his music is astounding.
