Rocky - £90
- One Hard Man and His Dog -
Rocky Balboa is a fictional character, a boxer, created and portrayed by Sylvester Stallone. It was the advice that his father once gave him, after teasing him for being unintelligent, that "if you can't use your brain, use your body instead" which led Rocky to take up boxing. Balboa's break came about when Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion Apollo Creed wanted to give a local fighter a chance. Balboa fought, and although he didn't win, it was the first opponent of Creeds to have lasted the full fifteen rounds. Later on, Creed wanted a rematch and Balboa showed him who was boss, winning the match by knockout. This was the start to an impressive boxing career for Rocky, full of both highs and lows. In 1986, however, Rocky was diagnosed with significant brain damage, caused by repeated blows to the head, and had to retire.
Rocky's fictional life is full-to-the-brim with achievements, yet he hasn't had them handed to him on a plate. He is, however, legendary and that's why I wanted to paint him. I chose to do a full-body painting because it is his body that he uses to fight. The lack of detail in this particular painting leaves the viewer wanting to know more about this mysterious character who, although he isn't real, has such a full life. I chose to paint a picture of him with his dog because that almost makes him real.
